Air Fryer Chick-fil-A Chicken Tenders

What I like about this air fryer method is that the coating gets nicely golden without deep frying, but only if the tenders are spaced out and lightly sprayed with oil. I rely more on the look of the coating than the clock here, because dry flour patches and crowded pieces are usually what keep the crust from crisping well.

This copycat version keeps things simple: a quick pickle juice marinade for tang, an oat milk and egg wash to keep it dairy-free, and a seasoned flour coating that cooks fast at 400°F (200°C). The tenders come out juicy inside with crisp edges, and they work just as well for dinner as they do for wraps, salads, or a dipping platter.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Chick-fil-A Chicken Tenders

  • 1 1/2 pounds chicken tenders (about 675g to 680g)
  • 1 cup dill pickle juice (240g)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened oat milk (120g)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
  • 1 to 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • About 1 to 2 teaspoons neutral oil, such as avocado or canola, for spraying

Spice note: In a flour coating like this, fine-ground spices from Selefina mix in evenly, so you get better color from the paprika and more even seasoning in every bite.

If you marinate closer to 24 hours, use the lower amount of salt in the flour since the pickle juice has more time to season the chicken.

You can cut chicken breasts into 1-inch-wide strips instead of using tenders. Unsweetened almond milk or soy milk can replace the oat milk. For gluten-free tenders, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend and expect the coating to brown a little differently.

How to Make Chicken Tenders in the Air Fryer

Golden air fryer Chick-fil-A chicken tenders in a single layer inside a black basket, lightly browned with crisp edges.
  1. Marinate the chicken: Place the chicken tenders in a bowl or zip-top bag and pour in the pickle juice. Make sure the pieces are submerged, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 24 hours.
  2. Mix the wash and seasoned flour: In one shallow dish, whisk the egg and oat milk until smooth. In a second dish, mix the flour, kosher salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne until evenly combined.
  3. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat to 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. If you use an air fryer-safe perforated parchment liner, add it only after preheating and only when the chicken will weigh it down.
  4. Dry and dredge the tenders: Remove the chicken from the marinade and pat it lightly dry. Dip each piece into the egg wash, then into the seasoned flour, pressing the flour onto the surface so there are no bare spots. Let the coated tenders rest on a plate or rack for 3 to 5 minutes so the coating has a chance to cling better.
  5. Arrange in the basket: Lightly mist the preheated basket or liner with oil. Arrange the tenders in a single layer with a little space between them, then lightly mist the tops, especially any floury areas. Cook in batches if needed so the coating crisps instead of steaming.
  6. Air fry the first side: Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 5 to 6 minutes, until the bottoms look lightly golden.
  7. Flip and finish: Turn the tenders with tongs and lightly mist again anywhere the coating still looks dry. Cook for 3 to 6 minutes more, for a total of about 8 to 12 minutes, until the coating is golden with crisp edges and the thickest piece reaches 165°F (74°C).
  8. Rest and serve: Transfer the tenders to a plate or wire rack and let them rest for 3 minutes. Taste and add a small pinch of salt if needed, then serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Air Fryer Time and Temperature for Chicken Tenders

For these breaded chicken tenders, use 400°F (200°C) and plan on about 8 to 12 minutes total. Flip at 5 to 6 minutes and re-spray lightly after flipping if the surface still looks floury.

Start checking around the 8-minute mark, especially in a basket-style air fryer. Oven-style air fryers often need 1 to 3 extra minutes, and rotating the tray can help with even browning.

The best doneness cues are a golden coating, no dry flour patches, crisp edges, and an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) in the thickest piece.

Why Did the Coating Fall Off?

This is where the texture can go wrong. After the pickle juice marinade, pat the chicken lightly dry so the flour does not turn gummy, then press the coating on instead of dusting it on loosely.

Letting the breaded tenders rest for a few minutes before they go into the basket also helps. Once they start cooking, flip carefully with tongs rather than scraping underneath too aggressively.

A light oil mist helps the coating brown and set. Avoid propellant aerosol sprays, which can damage some nonstick baskets and may leave off flavors.

Pickle Juice Marinade: How Long Is Too Long?

A 30-minute marinade gives the chicken a noticeable tang and helps it stay juicy. For deeper seasoning, 4 to 8 hours works well.

You can go up to 24 hours, but the tenders will taste saltier, which is why I keep the flour seasoning on the lower-salt side for a longer soak. However long you marinate, keep the chicken refrigerated and pat it lightly dry before dredging.

Air Fryer Chicken Tender Variations

Extra Crispy Chicken Tenders

For a thicker crust, use a double dredge: flour, then egg wash, then flour again. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons cornstarch to the flour mixture and mist the tenders a little more generously with oil. Watch closely, since the coating can brown faster and may smoke if oversprayed.

Chicken Tenders with a Cornstarch-Flour Coating

For a lighter, crisper crust, replace about 1/3 to 1/2 of the flour with cornstarch. The coating will brown faster, so start checking 1 to 2 minutes earlier than usual.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Chicken Tenders

These tenders are easy to serve with honey mustard, BBQ sauce, ranch, or a tangy mayo-based dip. They also work well sliced over romaine with tomatoes and pickles, or tucked into wraps and sandwiches with lettuce and extra pickles.

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Chick-fil-A Chicken Tenders

Let the tenders cool completely before storing so condensation does not soften the coating. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

To freeze, place the cooked tenders on a sheet pan until solid, then transfer them to a freezer bag for up to 2 months.

To reheat from the fridge, air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 4 to 6 minutes until hot and crisp at the edges. From frozen, reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 12 minutes.

A light mist of oil can help if the crust seems dry, but leftovers will not be quite as crisp as they were fresh. For a low-carb option, try our Air Fryer Keto Chicken Tenders with Almond Flour & Parmesan.
