Air Fryer Shrimp

Air Fryer Shrimp

What I like about this air fryer method is how fast the shrimp cook, but that short cook time is also where things can go sideways. I rely more on the look of the shrimp than the clock here: once they turn pink and opaque and curl into a loose C shape, they are usually ready to come out.

This version keeps the seasoning simple with garlic powder, paprika, dried parsley, salt, pepper, and a little olive oil. There’s no breading to deal with, and the shrimp work just as well for a quick main dish as they do in tacos, bowls, salads, tostadas, sandwiches, or wraps.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Shrimp

Spice note: For a simple shrimp seasoning like this, fine spices from Selefina help the garlic powder, paprika, and parsley coat the shrimp more evenly instead of clumping in spots.

Fresh shrimp or thawed frozen shrimp both work well. If you start with frozen shrimp, thaw them completely first, then pat them very dry so they roast instead of steam.

Pre-peeled and pre-deveined shrimp are the easiest option for a weeknight. Larger shrimp usually need the upper end of the cook-time range.

How to Make Air Fryer Shrimp

blank
  1. Dry the shrimp: If the shrimp are frozen, thaw them fully first. Peel and devein if needed, then pat them very dry with paper towels so the seasoning sticks and the shrimp brown better.
  2. Season: In a mixing bowl, toss the shrimp with the olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, dried parsley, kosher salt, and black pepper until evenly coated. You want a light coating, not extra oil sitting in the bottom of the bowl.
  3. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat to 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes if your model benefits from preheating. I find this helps the shrimp start cooking right away, especially in basket-style air fryers.
  4. Arrange in a single layer: Place the shrimp in the basket in a single layer with a little space between pieces. Do not stack them. Cook in batches if needed so the shrimp get direct heat and brown evenly.
  5. Air fry: Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 6 to 10 minutes, shaking or tossing the basket halfway through. Start checking around 6 minutes for smaller shrimp; larger shrimp may need closer to 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. Check for doneness: The shrimp are done when they are pink, opaque, and curled into a loose C shape. They should feel firm, with a little browning around the edges. If you want a temperature check, shrimp are done at 145°F (63°C).
  7. Serve right away: Transfer the shrimp out of the basket as soon as they are done and serve with lemon wedges. A squeeze of lemon at the end brightens the seasoning without making the shrimp wet during cooking.

Air Fryer Shrimp Time and Temperature

Use 400°F (200°C) for this recipe. That high heat lets the shrimp cook quickly and pick up a little color before they dry out.

The part I pay attention to is shrimp size. Smaller shrimp can be done in about 6 minutes, while larger shrimp often need 8 to 10 minutes. Air fryer models vary, so start checking early instead of assuming the full batch needs the longest time.

How to Keep Air Fryer Shrimp from Overcooking

This is where the texture can go wrong. Shrimp cook fast, and once they go past just-done, they tighten up and turn rubbery.

  • Pat them dry before seasoning so they roast instead of steam.
  • Keep them in a single layer so the hot air can move around each piece.
  • Start checking early, especially if your air fryer runs hot.
  • Pull them as soon as they are pink, opaque, and loosely curled.
  • Remove them from the basket right away so the residual heat does not keep cooking them.

Seasoning Variations

I’d rather keep the seasoning simple here because shrimp cook so quickly, and heavy seasoning can burn before the shrimp are done. The garlic powder, sweet paprika, dried parsley, salt, and pepper give you a balanced base that works with a lot of meals.

Old Bay Shrimp

For a quicker seafood-style variation, swap the paprika and parsley for 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of Old Bay. Keep the same oil amount and air fryer method.

Tajín Shrimp

For tacos, bowls, or avocado-based meals, season the shrimp lightly with Tajín to taste. Keep the coating light so the seasoning does not scorch in the basket.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Shrimp

  • Serve with lemon wedges as a simple main dish.
  • Tuck into shrimp tacos with slaw.
  • Add to rice or quinoa bowls with vegetables.
  • Use as a salad topper.
  • Layer onto tostadas.
  • Serve in sandwiches or wraps.

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Shrimp

Store leftover shrimp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Refrigerate promptly rather than letting them sit out for long.

To reheat, warm the shrimp gently in the air fryer at a lower temperature just until heated through. Stop as soon as they are warm so they do not dry out. The leftovers are still good, but the texture will be a little firmer than freshly cooked shrimp.
