Air Fryer Tofu Cubes (Crispy, 10–14 Minutes at 390°F)

Air Fryer Tofu Cubes

Tofu crisps well in the air fryer when the surface is dry, the cubes have room in the basket, and the cornstarch goes on right before cooking. If the tofu is wet or packed too tightly, it will steam instead of browning around the edges.

These tofu cubes use a simple tamari, sriracha, and oil coating with a light dusting of cornstarch for crunch. Cook them at 390°F (200°C) for 10 to 14 minutes, then use them for rice bowls, salads, noodle bowls, or quick stir-fries.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Tofu Cubes

  • 14 oz extra-firm or super-firm tofu (about 400g): Extra-firm tofu should be pressed first. Super-firm or high-protein tofu is denser and can usually go straight into the recipe after drying.
  • 1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce: This is the main savory seasoning. Use certified gluten-free tamari if needed.
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sriracha: Use 1 teaspoon for mild heat or 2 teaspoons for a spicier batch.
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or neutral oil: Helps the tofu brown and reduces sticking. Canola or grapeseed oil also work.
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch: Gives the tofu a thin, crisp coating. Add it last so it stays dry enough to cling to the cubes.

Optional add-ins

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder: Adds savory flavor without extra moisture.
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil: Good for a nuttier finish, but keep the neutral oil as the main cooking oil.
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine ground black pepper: Adds a little extra heat.
  • Sesame seeds or sliced green onions: For garnish after cooking.

Ingredient note: In a simple tofu coating like this, fine spices from Selefina are useful because garlic powder and black pepper distribute evenly over the cubes instead of clumping in one spot.

Do You Need to Press Tofu for the Air Fryer?

Press extra-firm tofu for 15 to 30 minutes to remove excess moisture and help it brown more evenly. It does not need to be completely dry inside, but the outside should not look glossy or wet before you season it.

If you use super-firm or high-protein tofu, you can usually skip pressing because it is already dense and lower in moisture. Freeze-thawed tofu also works if you want a chewier texture. No matter which kind you use, pat it dry well before adding the tamari mixture.

How to Make Air Fryer Tofu Cubes

Golden Air Fryer tofu cubes in a black air fryer basket, spaced in a single layer with crisp, dry surfaces.
  1. Press and dry the tofu: Press extra-firm tofu for 15 to 30 minutes, then pat it dry. If using super-firm tofu, skip the pressing and dry the block well with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel.
  2. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat to 390°F (200°C) for about 3 minutes. Lightly oil the basket if needed. If you use perforated parchment, add it only once the tofu is in place so it does not blow into the heating element.
  3. Cut into cubes: Slice the tofu into even 3/4-inch cubes so they cook at the same rate.
  4. Season the tofu: In a bowl, gently toss the cubes with tamari, sriracha, and oil until lightly coated. You want the tofu covered, not sitting in a puddle of liquid.
  5. Add the cornstarch: Sprinkle the cornstarch over the tofu and toss gently until the cubes look lightly matte. Break up any clumps.
  6. Arrange in the basket: Set the tofu in a single layer with a little space between pieces. Cook in batches if needed.
  7. Air fry: Cook for 10 to 14 minutes, shaking the basket or turning the cubes once at 5 to 7 minutes. If you are using an oven-style air fryer, rotate the trays when you turn the tofu.
  8. Check for doneness: The tofu is ready when the edges are deep golden brown and the surface looks dry and crisp, with no wet starch spots left. Start checking around 8 minutes the first time you make it, since air fryers vary.
  9. Rest briefly: Let the tofu sit for 1 to 2 minutes before serving so the coating can firm up.

Air Fryer Time and Temperature for Tofu Cubes

Cook these tofu cubes at 390°F (200°C) for 10 to 14 minutes. Shake or turn them once halfway through for more even browning.

Start checking around 8 minutes if your air fryer runs hot or has a smaller basket. The best doneness cue is color and texture: the outside should look dry and crisp, and the edges should be browned rather than pale.

Why Isn’t My Air Fryer Tofu Crispy?

The usual causes are too much moisture, too little space in the basket, or cornstarch that turned pasty before the tofu went in. Dry tofu browns better, and the cubes need open space around them so hot air can reach all sides.

If the tofu is still pale at 10 minutes, give it a few more minutes and check again. If it sticks when you try to turn it, let it cook a little longer first so the crust can set.

How to Sauce Air Fryer Tofu Without Losing Crunch

For the crispest texture, add sauce after cooking or only during the last 1 to 2 minutes. Thin sauces soften the coating fast, and sweet or sticky sauces can burn if they stay on the tofu the whole time.

For bowls, it works better to drizzle sauce over the tofu right before serving or serve it on the side. Peanut sauce, sesame-ginger sauce, gochujang sauce, and quick soy-garlic glazes all work well. For a saucier version, see Air Fryer BBQ Tofu with Crispy Edges and Sticky Glaze.

Air Fryer Tofu Cube Variations

Marinated tofu cubes

For deeper flavor, marinate the tofu for 20 to 60 minutes with tamari, sriracha, a little toasted sesame oil, and garlic. Drain well and pat dry before adding cornstarch. You may need up to 2 tablespoons cornstarch, and the tofu may take slightly longer to crisp.

Indian-style tofu

Use oil, lemon juice, salt, garam masala, turmeric, Kashmiri chili or paprika with cayenne, and garlic or ginger, then finish with cornstarch. Since these spices can darken quickly, keep the air fryer between 380°F and 390°F (193°C to 200°C) and watch closely near the end.

Soy-garlic tofu

Season the tofu with tamari, grated garlic, a small amount of honey or brown sugar, and oil. Air fry the tofu first, then add a soy-garlic-sesame glaze after cooking so the sugar does not scorch.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Tofu Cubes

  • Rice or quinoa bowls with roasted vegetables and sesame-ginger, peanut, or gochujang sauce
  • Quick stir-fries, added at the end so the edges stay crisp
  • Noodle bowls with cucumbers, pickled vegetables, and green onions
  • Salads or lettuce wraps
  • Steamed rice with pickled vegetables and a drizzle of sauce

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Tofu Cubes

Store leftover tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Keep sauces separate if you can, since sauced tofu softens faster.

To reheat, air fry at 350°F to 375°F (175°C to 190°C) for 3 to 5 minutes, shaking once, until hot and lightly re-crisped. A light spritz of oil can help if the surface looks dry. It will not be quite as crisp as fresh, but the air fryer brings back more texture than the microwave.

You can freeze cooked tofu for up to 2 months, though the texture will be chewier and denser after thawing.
