Air Fryer Sweet Chili Tofu
Tofu crisps best in the air fryer when the surface is dry, the coating is light, and the cubes have room for hot air to move around them. Too much moisture, or too much sauce too early, turns the edges soft instead of crisp.
This version uses extra-firm tofu, a simple cornstarch coating, and a quick sweet chili-style sauce you can make while the tofu cooks. Toss the tofu with just enough sauce to glaze it, then serve the rest on the side so the crust stays crisp longer.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Sweet Chili Tofu
For the tofu
- 14 oz extra-firm tofu, drained (about 400g) — extra-firm holds its shape best; do not use silken tofu.
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch (25g) — for a thin, crisp coating.
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper or black pepper
- Neutral oil spray or about 1 teaspoon neutral oil
For the sweet chili sauce
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar (about 40g)
- 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons Sambal Oelek, to taste
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons water, for the slurry
Optional finishes
- 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil, stirred into the sauce off heat
- Thinly sliced scallions and sesame seeds, for serving
- Lime wedges, for serving
Spice note: For a dry tofu coating like this, fine-textured spices help the seasoning cling evenly instead of leaving dusty spots. The linked garlic powder, onion powder, and fine sea salt work well for that.

Cornstarch vs. Arrowroot for Crispy Tofu
Cornstarch gives tofu a light, crisp coating and also works well in the sauce slurry. Arrowroot can replace it in either place, but it thickens a little faster and gives the sauce a glossier finish.
If you use arrowroot in the sauce, keep the simmer gentle and pull the pan from the heat as soon as it thickens. Overheating can make it a little gummy.
How to Make Sweet Chili Tofu in the Air Fryer

- Press and dry the tofu: Drain the tofu, wrap it in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel, and press it under a skillet or a few books for 10 to 15 minutes. Cut into 3/4-inch cubes and pat them very dry so the coating sticks cleanly.
- Coat the tofu: In a bowl, mix the cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, fine sea salt, and white pepper. Add the tofu and toss gently until the cubes are lightly and evenly dusted. Shake off any heavy excess so the coating does not turn clumpy.
- Preheat the air fryer: Preheat to 390°F (200°C) for about 3 minutes. A short preheat helps the coating set faster and reduces sticking.
- Load the basket: Lightly spray the basket with oil, or toss the tofu with about 1 teaspoon oil. Arrange the cubes in a single layer with a little space between them. Cook in batches if needed so they crisp instead of steam.
- Air fry: Cook at 390°F (200°C) for 10 to 14 minutes, shaking the basket or flipping the cubes at 6 to 7 minutes. Start checking around 9 to 10 minutes if your air fryer runs hot. The tofu is done when the edges are lightly golden, the coating feels firm, and the cubes release easily from the basket.
- Make the sauce: While the tofu cooks, combine the 1/3 cup water, rice vinegar, sugar, Sambal Oelek, and soy sauce in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Stir together the 2 teaspoons cornstarch and 2 teaspoons water, whisk it into the sauce, and simmer for 30 to 60 seconds until glossy and thick enough to coat a spoon.
- Toss and serve: Transfer the hot tofu to a bowl. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of sauce and toss gently to glaze. Add more only if needed, then finish with scallions, sesame seeds, or lime. Serve the remaining sauce on the side.
Air Fryer Time and Temperature for Sweet Chili Tofu
Cook the tofu at 390°F (200°C) for 10 to 14 minutes. Shake or flip halfway through for more even browning.
Air fryer models vary, so use the texture and color as the final check. The tofu should look lightly golden around the edges and feel crisp on the outside before you sauce it.
Why Isn’t My Tofu Crispy?
The usual problem is moisture. If the tofu is not pressed and patted dry well, the cornstarch turns pasty instead of crisp. Heavy coating can do the same thing.
Crowding is the other common issue. If the cubes are packed tightly, they steam and stay pale. Cook in batches if needed, and wait to add the sweet chili sauce until right before serving.

Sweet Chili Sauce Timing: Toss, Don’t Air Fry It On
This sauce contains sugar, so it can darken fast if you put sauced tofu back into the air fryer. It also softens the crust.
For the best texture, air fry the tofu until crisp first, then toss it with just enough warm sauce to glaze. If you like it saucier, add more at the table instead of in the basket.
Substitutions for Sweet Chili Tofu
- Tamari or coconut aminos: Use instead of soy sauce. Tamari is the closer swap; check labels if gluten is a concern.
- Sriracha: Use in place of Sambal Oelek for a slightly sweeter, garlickier sauce.
- Crushed red pepper flakes: Use instead of Sambal Oelek, starting with 1/2 teaspoon.
- Apple cider vinegar: Use in place of rice vinegar for a slightly fruitier sauce.
- Brown sugar or honey: Use instead of granulated sugar. If using honey, keep the simmer gentle.
- Store-bought Thai sweet chili sauce: Warm it briefly and thin with 1 to 2 teaspoons water if it is very thick.
Variations
Sweet Chili Tofu Without Cornstarch
Skip the cornstarch and toss the tofu cubes with about 1 teaspoon neutral oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 12 to 16 minutes, shaking halfway, then toss lightly with sauce. The crust will be less crisp, so give the cubes plenty of space and cook until the edges brown.
Air Fryer Teriyaki Tofu
Use the same tofu coating and air fryer method, then swap in a teriyaki-style glaze made with soy sauce, mirin or sugar, rice vinegar, ginger, and a slurry. Keep the heat low when thickening so the sauce does not scorch. For a full version, try our Air Fryer Teriyaki Tofu.
Sweet-and-Sour Tofu
For a takeout-style variation, replace the sauce with a sweet-and-sour version using ketchup or tomato paste, sugar, rice vinegar, optional pineapple juice, soy sauce, and a slurry. Simmer only until glossy so it stays pourable.
What to Serve with Air Fryer Sweet Chili Tofu
- Jasmine rice and steamed or roasted broccoli

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Sweet Chili Tofu
- Store: Let the tofu cool completely, then refrigerate the tofu and sauce separately for up to 3 to 4 days.
- Best make-ahead approach: Keep the tofu unsauced until you are ready to eat. Sauced tofu softens in the fridge.
- Reheat unsauced tofu: Air fry at 360°F (182°C) for 3 to 5 minutes, until the edges crisp again. Warm the sauce separately and toss just before serving.
- Reheat sauced tofu: Air fry at 350°F (175°C) just until warmed through, or reheat gently in a skillet. It will be softer than freshly cooked tofu.
- Make the sauce ahead: The sauce keeps for 3 to 4 days. If it thickens in the refrigerator, warm it with a small splash of water.

- Do not coat tofu with the sauce before air frying; add sauce only after it’s crisp.
